Summer of Reading and Books

When I was a child, I read a lot. I read so much, my mother threatened to burn my books if I stay up all night reading again. I do it anyway. All the time. I'm averaging 5 hours of sleep ever since I can remember. That's probably why it's harder for me to shed off these pounds I've gained.

On the other hand, my children enjoy a variety of electronic entertainment. I don't know why I buy them, but somehow, we have 7 nintendo dsi, 3 Xbox 360, 3 desktop, and games. Of course, they hardly have any time for reading anymore. Reading to them means watching a DVD of a book recording. I have to admit I like the video presentation of The Cat In The House or Click, Clack, Moo: The Cow That Types. However, that is not the same as holding a book and getting lost in print.

Are we really so digitized that reading now means electronically? I'm guilty of owning a Kindle 3, Sony pocket reader, and a color nook. If it seem to be an overkill, it probably is. But Kindle was an 18th year anniversary present (upgraded), Sony reader was for borrowing digital items from the library, and the nook, well. I think it might have been the Angry Birds that did it! I did buy Taming the Beast by Eloisa James. I love this book.

Anyway, my husband and I think that we will have a relatively electronic-free summer for the children. I am sure they will survive two months of books, books and more books. Yeah, they can take piano and guitar lessons, too. I might even take them to sports camp, too. But for now, we're powering off the electronics. Wish me luck!

  2. We have a rule in the house that after 8, the small one reads until she falls asleep instead of watching tv or surfing the net.

Good luck... I think it would be good. They are going to survive and enjoy.

    Reading stimulates imagination and creativity.

  5. I'm regretting too that I introduced my kids to these bunch of electronics. I'm trying to slow it down now. I want them to be addicted with books even though I'm not much of a bookworm. I think eBook is alright ^_^x

  6. I can also relate here. Most of my books are already stored in my iPhone. I guess it's not just about being all digital, but it's more convenient.
